"High expectations are the key to everything”
(Sam Walton)
It is a great pleasure to serve as your DB president for this upcoming year.
My mission is to increase networking among members, provide educational opportunities through CME lectures and to support our various committees.
I believe in the power of the Internet and I hope that our members are getting excited to use the DB website as a resource tool, to stay connected and to exchange ideas.
We will be holding a “ Meet and Greet” socializing event in September, a Fall and early Spring CME lecture, the Legislative Breakfast in December followed by the Annual Meeting and Residents' Research Awards Dinner in April.
We had our first CME activity in June on the psychiatric aspects of living organ donation. A summary of the lecture is available on the web site.
I welcome ideas or comments for future topics for CME or DB activities.
Let us know how we can best serve you! We welcome suggestions from our members.
Again it is a pleasure to serve you! See you in the park! (I am still training hard with the goal of completing a half iron man in 8 hours)
“A dream without a goal is just a wish”
(Bill Cole)
Have a great summer!
Silvia Hafliger MD President

The Annual District Branch Dinner Meeting and Resident Research Awards Night was held on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the New York Academy of Medicine. Approximately 75 members were in attendance. The CME program, "Disability in HIV Patients: Entitlement or Survival," was presented by Kenneth Ashley, M.D., Scott Shapiro, M.D., Joseph Lux, M.D., and Philip Bialer, M.D., members of the DB's AIDS Committee. A copy of their power point presentation, Social Security Benefits: The Basics, can be found in the documents section of the members area of the website. Winners of the 2010 DB election were announced and introduced. The evening also included a display of posters representing the submissions received for the Resident Research Awards. To Give or Not to Give, Reflections of a Transplant Psychiatrist on Living Organ Donation
This is the first CME lecture of many more to come. With drug companies withdrawing from dinner CME activities, we hope the DB can fill this void. We hope you find the lectures interesting and stimulating; although, the food may not be as exotic and tasty.
Over 70,000 people are on the national waiting list for kidney transplant and 18,000 patients are waiting for a liver transplant.

Dr. Freedman is Immediate Past President and Co-Chair of the Public Affairs Committee of the New York County District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association, and was a psychiatrist at St. Vincent’s Hospital from 1995-2010.
There has been much written about the plight of St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan for the past 4 months. This 160 year old institution, known for its response during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, and for treating the poor, victims of the cholera epidemic of 1849, the Titanic and 9/11, is closed.
